Football not Footy

Chelsea supporter in face paint
A Chelsea Fan

Sunday afternoon and on my way to Fulham to get a haircut, I had the pleasure of sharing a packed tube with a couple of hundred Chelsea FC supporters on their way to see Chelsea v Liverpool. The mood on the was definitely festive in the way that a large bunch of guys getting drunk generally is. Festive but with a testosterone fueled tendency toward violence, so fun but slightly intense at the same time.

I got off the train at Fulham with the rest of the crowd to find that the entrance to the shopping centre via the station was barred and had to go out onto the street, which was blockaded off from traffic, to see a sea of Football fans heading towards me. Obviously a big match to block off the whole road.

I walked against the crowd toward the barbers to see a bunch of Liverpool fans barricaded into a pub by mounted police.

There were cops everywhere. It felt like a war zone. There was no violence just a lot of shouting of "We fookin hate scouser coonts" and the like. The whole thing was quite surreal. It's like normal people turn into raving football hooligans for the space of a couple of hours and then return to normal and everyone else just looks on and laughs.

Police
Woop Woop. It's the sound of tha police

I think we're pretty passionate about sport at home but I just can't see there ever being this much "Charge" for lack of a better word, surrounding a game of AFL. And Nothing even happened. Bizarre!
