All good on the hood

Retro hood ornament

Just a snapshot today. Wandering around Covent Garden, rather waiting out the front of a shoe shop for Jade and Claire I happened along a slightly beat up vintage car. I don’t even remember what kind of car this type of hood ornament belongs to. But I love it! It has a real super hero vibe about it. It says speed, agility and power without screaming “check out my massive wang!”

I don’t think there is nearly enough time spent on these kind of embellishments in the automotive industry any more. Not that I’m old enough to remember I time when these were the norm but cars just seem so vanilla in comparison to the old days.

Hmmm, the more I look at this photo, the more the the A is beginning to look phallic. But still I’m standing by what I’ve said. It’s still more superhero than midlife crisis trying to tune birds.

Very nice. By the way, what’s with the fixation on fallic symbols? If you wouldn’t have commented about it I would have never seen it. :)

I have a new photoblog up at http://fotografiker.se where I post photos taken with my new camera. Check it out!

    Hey Josef,
It would seem there has been a bit of a running theme on the old phallic symbols. Not so much a fixation as an accidental recurrence. It all started with Tania’s comment a little while back. Probably not the most appropriate topic but I do like using the word wang. hehe.

Thanks for the comments. Really like your new site man.

I remember those older cars would have some funky ornaments. Now a day’s it’s just a plain little badge.

  5. Robotperson Says:

@ Daniel - I think it’s something to do with badges being less ‘gougey’. This would shred you as you bounced over the bonnet.

Nice one Rob, I’m thinking this is a plausible argument for not having cool, sharp hood ornaments. That said, they are still way cooler than the soft edged Ford badges of today.
    Bring the pain.

    Cool shot!!

Old cars make fantastic photo subjects - I’ve always thought so. Some time back while driving down a dusty back road in the-middle-of-nowhere-Arkansas I came upon an old Buick Lasalle. Just sitting there on the side of the road like it had been there for 30 years. That’s just plain fun.

the A is for AUSTIN. they sure were not superhero status cars.
