The Author
domestik.net is the personal web site of Peter Costello, an Australian currently living and working in London with my beautiful wife Jade.
A graphic designer with over 10 years commercial experience in design and art direction across traditional and new media currently working as Design Director at London agency atticmedia.com
When I’m not working, I enjoy playing squash, skating (although not nearly enough) photography and especially exploring and sightseeing in the UK.
Domestik.net
The purpose of this site, other than to keep a track of my folio (coming soon) is to learn more about CSS, semantics, the separation of design from content while providing a place for experimentation and to encourage myself to write.
The Name Domestik
The use of the k is because domestic.net was taken. Why then domestic? At the time I was working from home and often joked about being the domesticated house frau of the family. I’ve since attached some meaning to it using the dictionary. Most fitting being “To train or adapt”.
Technical Stuff
The sites templates were hand coded using homesite 5.5 and should validate as xhtml1 transitional. I have taken great measures to adhere to web standards, separating all design from content using CSS. They utilise the suckerfish menu system as found on alistapart and htmldog and also take advantage of the sIFR flash replacement technique for the h1’s.
The content management is handled using movable type, which, given that I am a graphic designer as opposed to a techie, is actually pretty easy to set up. The linkage section is handled by the quick post favelet for Movable type. I use the compare plugin which allows me to specify different templates for different entry categories. I also use the elipsis plugin by brandon fuller which allows me to truncate entries on the index pages whilststill including HTML in the entry.
